The Fundamentals: Exposure, Optics, and the Moving Camera
Cinematography — the art and science of recording moving images — is the discipline most directly responsible for what a film looks like: the quality of light on a face, the compression of space created by a telephoto lens, the unsteady energy of a hand-held camera, the ghostly depth of a long-exposure night shot. The cinematographer (also called the director of photography or DP) collaborates with the director to translate a screenplay and a visual concept into the specific images that appear on screen.
The fundamental variables of the cinematographer's craft are exposure, optics, and camera movement. Exposure — how much light reaches the film or sensor — determines the overall brightness and contrast of the image, as well as its grain or digital noise at the extremes. A deliberately underexposed image has dense shadows and muted highlights; an overexposed one has blown-out whites and an airy, hallucinatory quality. Cinematographers like Roger Deakins (known for precise, controlled images) and Emmanuel Lubezki (known for available-light naturalism and extreme overexposure) have developed highly distinctive relationships with exposure.
The optics of a lens determine the angle of view and the depth of field: how wide or narrow the filmed space appears, and how much of it is in sharp focus. A wide-angle lens close to the subject creates deep focus — both foreground and background sharp — and distorts perspective toward the dramatic. A telephoto lens far from the subject creates shallow focus — one plane sharp, everything else blurred — and compresses spatial depth, making elements that are far apart appear adjacent. Orson Welles and Gregg Toland's Citizen Kane used deep-focus photography to create compositions in which multiple planes of action could be read simultaneously, creating complex spatial and dramatic relationships within the frame.
Camera movement adds a temporal dimension: the pan follows action horizontally, the tilt vertically, the track moves the camera through space with the subject. Steadicam, developed in the 1970s, allows fluid hand-held-style movement without the instability of a shoulder-mounted camera. Stanley Kubrick's use of Steadicam in The Shining (1980) — the long corridor shots, the labyrinth sequences — created a quality of smooth, gliding movement that felt simultaneously elegant and menacing, a formal correlative of the film's psychological horror.
